The second seminar on the Alabama Fair Campaign Practices Act for the 2014 election cycle is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the State Capitol Auditorium in Montgomery. The first seminar was June 19 in Birmingham. A major change to the law affecting businesses was removal of the $500 campaign contribution limit per election cycle. Once the law takes effect there is no contribution limit for corporations.
The seminar covers how the FCPA has changed since 2010 including the changes made in the 2013 legislative session. New issues include the ban on contribution transfers between political action committees – PAC to PAC transfers – and what it means for candidates, changes in the filing schedule, the impact of electronic filing, and the relationship between candidates and political parties.
With SB 445 enacted as Act #2013-311 the 2013 legislature revised several provisions of the FCPA. The new provisions take effect Aug. 1 if some or all of them are pre-cleared by the Justice Department as required by federal law. Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman’s office, the Alabama Law Institute, and the Alabama State Bar are sponsoring the seminar. Chapman’s office requests an RSVP to Stephanie Gray at stephanie.gray@sos.alabama.gov or 334-353-2171.
