Fortune Magazine has named Business Council of Alabama member Intuitive Research and Technology Corp. as one of the best medium-size workplaces in the United States for 2014.
The engineering and defense contractor of 279 employees and revenue of $248 million was No. 1 in the 11th Annual Great Place to Work ranking by the business publication. The company has been mentioned in the 10 Great Places to Work ranking five years in a row.
Earlier this year Intuitive was ranked as the nation’s best place to work for millennials – those under age 35. Intuitive has additional sites in Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Texas.
The company that has a low turnover rate of 3 percent has many perks, according to a company survey. They include employee education reimbursement, unlimited influenza leave, significant salaries and benefits, 401-K matches up to 5 percent, paid time off, 100 percent company-paid health coverage for employees, 38 percent company-paid health coverage for dependents, flexible schedules, and generous vacation and holiday time off.
Intuitive co-founder and President Harold Brewer said the ranking is a reflection on the local community.
“At Intuitive, our employees are the driving force to our success, which is why we invest so heavily in our people,” Brewer said. “Each year we strive to improve our workplace and to build an even stronger corporate culture. Winning this award is a true reflection on what is most important to Intuitive.”
This year’s medium-size nominees – between 251 and 999 employees – involved hundreds of U.S. companies. Businesses submitted an employee survey and detailed questionnaire about benefit programs and company practices. Each application was evaluated on credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie, Great Place to Work said.
“The work of these companies is quite impressive,” Great Place to Work CEO China Gorman said. “They provide an example that others can look to, to see what kind of outstanding workplace is possible—regardless of size, industry, or other circumstances.”
Intuitive is a technology and aerospace company whose customers include the military and the private sector. The company founded in 1999 had $38,000 in sales in the first six months. At the end of 2013, company sales had grown to $248 million.
