MONTGOMERY, Ala. – House Ways and Means Education Chairman Bill Poole received the Business Champion Award today for his commitment to improving Alabama’s public education.
BCA President and CEO William J. Canary, West Alabama Chamber President and CEO Jim Page, who is a BCA board member, and Jeremy Arthur, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, presented the award to Poole, R-Tuscaloosa.
Rep. Poole sponsored HB 227 last year that provided $12 million for Alabama school systems to use to match federal technology dollars for wireless infrastructure. The funding supported the Alabama Wireless Infrastructure Renovation for Education Act that authorized wireless broadband access in all Alabama K-12 public schools.
“Representative Poole has shown unwavering support for solid budgeting and for creating a positive environment for job creation and support of education programs that enhance the chances of our children receiving the educations they need to prosper in the workforce,” Canary said
“Representative Poole expertly shepherded the Education Trust Fund budget for this fiscal year that contained many financial increases deemed important by the Alabama business community,” Page said.
Rep. Poole’s leadership advanced the educational priorities of the Business Education Alliance of Alabama by supporting funding needs. They included $16 million for Pre-K, $4 million for Student Assessment, $3 million for Teacher Mentoring, $2.3 million for At-Risk students, $2 million to recruit Career Tech instructors from the private sector, $1 million for Advanced Placement, $1 million for Distance Learning, $400,000 for Career Coaches, and $200,000 for Workforce Development.
Poole was a previous recipient of a Business Champion Award. The Business Champion Award recognizes legislators for their sponsorship and support of policies that better Alabama’s business climate and the lives of employees, families, and citizens.
