FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct. 4, 2017
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The board of directors of ProgressPAC has endorsed Birmingham attorney James L. “Jay” Mitchell in the June 5, 2018, Republican Supreme Court Place 4 primary, ProgressPAC Chairman Perry Hand announced today.
“ProgressPAC is proud to endorse Jay Mitchell in next spring’s Supreme Court primary,” said Hand, chairman and chief executive officer of Volkert Inc. in Mobile. “Jay is supremely qualified, knows the law, and will uphold the Constitution.
“Jay possesses the qualities that businesses desire in members of the state’s highest court, which include the ability to look at each case fairly and neutrally and strictly interpret the law,” said Hand, who is first vice president of the Business Council of Alabama.
Mitchell said he is honored to receive the support of Alabama’s business community.
“I believe that they see my proven dedication to the rule of law and know that I will serve the people of Alabama with integrity and principle,” Mitchell said. “Gaining this endorsement shows that our campaign is building momentum throughout the state, and our campaign looks forward to announcing other support in the future.”
Mitchell is a first-time, elected-office seeker for what will be an open seat currently held by Supreme Court Associate Justice Jim Main, who cannot seek reelection due to age restrictions mandated by Alabama law.
Mitchell is a shareholder at Maynard, Cooper & Gale in Birmingham and previously served on the firm’s executive committee. He is an accomplished litigator, has tried a number of complex cases, and successfully handled appeals and obtained favorable settlements for clients.
Mitchell has a long history of involvement in the Republican Party and the conservative movement in Alabama, including service as election counsel to numerous candidates, service on the executive committee of the Alabama Republican Party, and as a founder of the Red Mountain Republicans in Birmingham. He is also a member of the Federalist Society.
He serves on the board of directors at Cornerstone School, an inner city Christian school. He has long been involved with the Birmingham Athletic Partnership, which partners with local businesses to provide resources and equipment to inner city public schools. Mitchell also counsels and works with Scholarships for Kids, a scholarship granting organization that helps to send students from low-income families to high-quality schools.
Mitchell graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Birmingham-Southern College and served as president of the student body. He played forward on BSC’s 1995 championship basketball team. He earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law, and holds an M.A. from University College Dublin (Ireland).
Mitchell and his wife, Elizabeth, are longtime members of Church of the Highlands. They reside in Homewood with their four children.
