FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Feb. 22, 2017
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Fayette County Rep. Kyle South received the Business Champion Award today for his successful sponsorship of small business tax relief legislation that enables businesses to hire new employees.
In the 2016 legislative session, the Fayette Republican sponsored HB 36, the Alabama Small Business and Agribusiness Jobs Act. It passed with no opposition.
HB 36 authorizes a tax credit of $1,500 per employee for a small business that hires a new, full-time resident of Alabama in a job that pays at least $40,000 a year. The bill defines a small business as having 75 or fewer employees, is qualified to do business in Alabama, and is headquartered in or has its principal place of business in the state. The bill also authorizes an additional $1,000 tax credit for hiring a recently deployed and unemployed veteran of the U.S. Armed Services.
HB 36 was part of the Business Council of Alabama’s 2016 legislative agenda and was a priority of the House Republican Caucus, which recognizes that small businesses have created more than 65 percent of new jobs over the past 20 years nationally.
The award was presented by BCA President and CEO William J. Canary and Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama President and CEO Jim Page.
“Small businesses are the economic engines of Alabama,” Canary said. “The Business Council of Alabama recognizes that small businesses provide the majority of jobs for Alabamians, and we applaud Representative South and the Legislature for recognizing the need to provide small businesses looking to add jobs with the necessary incentives they need.”
“Small businesses are the grass roots of the commercial world and those roots support many families and commerce in small towns and large cities,” Page said.
Rep. South was first elected in 2014.
The Business Champion Award recognizes legislators for sponsorship and support of policies that better Alabama’s business climate and the lives of employees, families, and citizens.
The BCA, Alabama’s foremost voice for business, is a non-partisan statewide business association representing the interests and concerns of nearly 1 million working Alabamians through its member companies and its partnership with the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama. The BCA is Alabama’s exclusive affiliate to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers.
