BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Sept. 22) – The Business Council of Alabama’s annual Chairman’s Dinner held Wednesday at the Sheraton Birmingham included recognition of outstanding federal and state legislators and a former BCA chairman.
U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Mobile, was the recipient of the Robert “Bubba” Lee Political Courage Award, and 2013 BCA Chairman Carl Jamison, shareholder JamisonMoneyFarmer PC in Tuscaloosa, received the BCA Chairman’s Award for 2016.
State Sen. Jabo Waggoner, R-Vestavia Hills, was recognized for his exemplary public service that began in 1966 when he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives.
BCA First Vice Chairman Jeff Coleman, president and CEO of Coleman Worldwide Moving in Midland City, and Robert “Bubba” Lee, presented the Robert “Bubba” Lee Political Courage Award to Rep. Byrne who is serving his second term in Congress.
“From his time on the Alabama State Board of Education, to the Alabama Senate, and from his tenure as chancellor of the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education, and now as a member of Congress, he has proven time and time again that he is not afraid to make the difficult decisions and be a forceful advocate for our state,” Coleman said.
“He has shown through his support that he cares about the Alabama business community, and values the role they play and the jobs they create,” Coleman said. “He has a keen understanding of the state’s ability to expand our workforce by fostering a business climate that creates good jobs.”
Rep. Byrne was attending a congressional session Washington, D.C. The award was accepted by his son, Patrick Byrne.
The Robert “Bubba” Lee Political Courage Award is named for BCA Chairman-Emeritus Lee and awarded annually to someone who is willing to take a position that’s right, no matter the cost. He was BCA chairman in 1996.
BCA Chairman Tommy Lee, president and CEO of Vulcan Inc. in Foley and Robert “Bubba” Lee’s brother, presented Jamison with the Chairman’s Award, which is awarded annually by the current BCA chairman to a recipient of his or her choice. Tommy Lee said Jamison has been a BCA leader and a mentor during his tenure as chairman.
“He is described by his peers as a community servant, committed to his clients, who treats everyone with equal dignity and respect, from the janitor at his office to the highest of dignitaries,” Tommy Lee said. “His children describe their father as a humble man, a man of high integrity, a man devoted to his family.”
BCA President and CEO William J. Canary recognized Sen. Waggoner for his 50 years of public service. Sen. Waggoner is a former Senate minority and majority leader and currently serves as Senate Rules Committee chairman.
“Senator Jabo Waggoner exemplifies all the qualities of public service – courage, integrity, passion and concern for others,” Canary said. “It is a privilege to call him a friend personally and of the BCA.”
